UN: Millions of Children Still Suffering From War, Poverty and Disease

World Children’s Day and 30 Years of Convention on the Rights of the Child

IMPERIUMDAILY.COM-NEWYORK – World Children’s Day is celebrated every November 20. This date came after the United Nations first coined World Children’s Day in 1954.

The purpose of the United Nations was to campaign for brotherhood and understanding among children. The UN also wants to improve the welfare of children throughout the world.

On November 20, 1959, the United Nations General Assembly made a Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Then in 1989, the United Nations began to declare the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The international convention regulates the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of children.

Reporting from the official website of the United Nations, children’s rights are defined as the right to life, the right to health, education and to play. Including the right to family life, to be protected from violence, not to be discriminated against, and to be heard by their opinions.

Since then, the United Nations has invited all countries and territories to celebrate children’s rights on World Children’s Day. The UN also calls on each country to continue to build a friendly environment for children.

This year, the commemoration of World Children’s Day coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, conveyed several messages to all countries in the world through videos uploaded to the UN YouTube account.
Guterres reminded all countries to implement global commitments related to children’s rights. According to him, all countries have committed to recognize the unique vulnerabilities of children, and provide them with food, health care, education and protection.

However, Guterres regretted that millions of children in the world still suffer. Either because of war, poverty, discrimination and disease. In this case, Guterres invites all countries to always prioritize the welfare of children.
“As we mark the 30th anniversary of this landmark Convention, I urge all countries to keep their promise to them. Let’s build on advances and re-commit to putting children first. For every child, every right.” he said.
