NUSADAILY.COM-JAKARTA-Singapore daily media, The Straits Times named President Jokowi as the Asian of the Year 2019.
This newspaper chose Jokowi because he was considered to be a unifying figure in the midst of various problems that were plaguing Indonesia.
“He (Jokowi) has shown agility and seriousness in navigating complicated domestic political flow and international affairs. Abroad, they laud their ability to look beyond the horizon and grapple with strategic challenges facing the country and its region,” wrote an editorial statement The Straits Times, Thursday, (5/12/2019).
Jokowi responded to his coronation as the 2019 Asian of the
Year by remaining inferior. He said that the award was addressed to Indonesia.
“Thank you. This honor not only for me, but for Indonesia,” Jokowi wrote on his personal Twitter account.
As is known, 2019 is a turbulent year for Jokowi. After going through various stages to compete in the 2019 Presidential Election, he still had to face riots afterwards. Various calls for action escorted by students in rejecting government policies and demanding justice for the people of Papua, became the biggest protest venue since 1998.
In addition to dealing with domestic issues, The Straits Times also mentioned Jokowi succeeded in bringing Indonesia’s name to the international, through the concept of cooperation that Jokowi revealed at the East Asia Summit in Singapore last November.
“Jokowi made the leaders of member countries adopt the ‘ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific’ designed by Indonesia, at the ASEAN meeting in Bangkok in June and which maintained the neutral position of regional groups amid increasing competition between China and the United States (US) for supremacy in the countries of the region, “explained The Straits Times.
Chief Editor of Singapore Press Holdings and The Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez even said, Jokowi has brought the name of Indonesia more advanced.
“President Joko Widodo has done very well. He has not only won a second term, but has also brought Indonesia with him forward,” said Warren Fernandez.
The Strait Times placed Jokowi on the first page of the newspaper with the headline ‘Respect Leader, at home and abroad’.
Previously, several state leaders also received similar awards. Among them are Singaporean founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. (lna)
